04 February 2019 Townsville flooding emergency

In the past week Townsville has received more than a year’s worth of rain, resulting in mass flooding and the evacuation of homes.

As one of Australia’s largest military locations, Defence Housing Australia manages many properties in the region and is actively monitoring the situation as it develops to help inform all its valued stakeholders.

While the risk due to the severe weather warning is ongoing, DHA urges all Defence members and Investors to keep up-to-date with information on the flooding conditions in the area by visiting Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) and the Townsville Disaster Information. If you are living in the affected areas please follow the direction of emergency services and utilise the evacuation centres if required.

DHA has many staff living and working in the region who have been personally affected. As such, we have activated staff from our other regional offices to pitch in and help. Emergency maintenance requests are being logged and triaged on a priority basis, however many properties are currently inaccessible.

Please be patient as we ensure the health, safety and security of everyone involved as our first priority. Once the weather improves, floodwaters recede, and local authorities open roads again, we will begin to assess the property damage.

Given the extent of the flooding event, assessments may take some time.

We encourage you to follow our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/defencehousingaustralia for further updates as the situation progresses.
