18 November 2015 Green light for new apartments in Fremantle

DHA's 166 new apartments and commercial space in the heart of Fremantle’s East End has moved one step closer to reality.

The proposal to build multi-storey apartment buildings on a 4,754sqm site on Queen Victoria Street was approved by the South-West Metro Development Assessment Panel (DAP) at its meeting on Thursday 12 November. This follows the City of Fremantle’s Planning Committee unanimously recommending it for endorsement.

Upon completion, the new development will become home to approximately 300 people, including Defence members and at least five commercial operations, likely to include at least one restaurant.

The development will also feature an expansive courtyard, helping to create more useable public open space in this up-and-coming area, which is currently experiencing a raft of new investment.

‘This is a great project that will deliver tangible benefits to existing and future Fremantle residents and we are delighted that the City of Fremantle supports the vision we have for this site,’ said DHA’s Acting Managing Director, Jan Mason.

Fremantle Mayor, Dr Brad Pettitt, said the City was looking forward to welcoming more residents to Fremantle’s east end as part of the DHA development.

‘Attracting more people to live and work in Fremantle is a key driver in the City’s plans to revitalise the CBD. With a $1.3b development pipeline underway set to bring more hotels, housing options and key workers into town, it’s an exciting time to call Freo home,’ said Dr Pettitt.

Unlike other built form developers DHA is not reliant on pre-sales before it commences construction and with development approval now in place DHA is committed to fast-tracking the delivery of these new homes.

The Federal Government body is currently overseeing on-site demolition activity and is working on detailed plans for the development, including a range of integrated sustainability measures.

‘We’re eager to deliver this project in a timely manner so that we can ensure there is an adequate supply of high quality homes available for our Defence members. All going to plan, we’ll begin forward works by the end of the year and building work will commence next Autumn,’ Ms Mason added.

Sales for the DHA development are anticipated to begin in early 2016. Subject to relevant building approvals and construction timelines, the first residents and commercial tenants are expected to move in by early 2018.
