Approximately 49 apartments will be constructed for Defence Force members in the suburbs of Everton Park, Chermside and Stafford, as part of a new agreement between Defence Housing Australia (DHA) and the Queensland Department of Housing and Public Works (DHPW).
Under the agreement, DHA will have access to suitable land for housing Defence Force members near Gallipoli Barracks, Enoggera.
DHA Managing Director, Peter Howman, said lack of land is a real issue in most major cities where Defence bases are located in established urban areas.
“This agreement provides access to land in prime locations for Defence housing needs – an important factor in meeting some of the housing needs of the Defence Force,” he said.
A further 17 apartments will be built by DHA and retained by DPHW for their housing needs, in the suburbs of Stafford and Keperra.
The existing DHPW houses in these suburbs are primarily large, old houses on big blocks, which no longer meet the needs of the ageing and mostly single occupants.
Defence Housing Australia’s primary function is to supply housing and related services to Defence members and their families in line with Defence operational requirements. DHA currently manages more than 19,000 properties across Australia worth about $10 billion.
