Defence Housing Australia’s (DHA) Fremantle development, Liv Apartments, will provide a significant boost to the local economy, with approximately 400 subcontractors and labourers over the life of the project.
DHA Managing Director, Jan Mason, said project builder Georgiou Group would have 10 staff on site as well as four directly employed labourers.
Ms Mason said it was expected that up to 15 apprentices would be working on the project, including those from the electrical, mechanical and plumbing trades.
‘Working with local builders and trades people is an important part of the DHA development philosophy,’ Ms Mason said.
‘We see local jobs for local people as the first step in creating sustainable communities and great places to live. We’re delighted to be working with both Georgiou employees as well as Western Australian contractors in this exciting new project.’
Georgiou was awarded the contract in December 2015 for the construction of a mixed use residential development in Queen Victoria Street, Fremantle.
The former run-down car yard will be remodelled into an attractive, modern, 166 apartment complex with 1,300sqm of commercial space, as well as landscaped courtyards and public open spaces to add diversity and character to the local area.
Ms Mason said the $61 million Liv Apartments project would create a new local community when completed, providing hundreds of new customers for local businesses.
‘Economic modelling by the City of Fremantle suggests new residents in Liv could potentially contribute $16.7 million to the local economy every year. Additionally, Liv will have up to nine commercial tenancies, potentially bringing new businesses and new employees into the precinct.’
It was recently announced Liv Apartments will be the first apartment development in Western Australia to achieve One Planet Community certification.
The OPL Framework is based on 10 principles covering areas including carbon, waste, transport, food and water. Bioregional Australia Foundation manages OPL certification in Australia. Liv will be only the fifth OPL-endorsed community in Australia.
