14 July 2013 Artistic minds to intersect at Weston

Defence Housing Australia (DHA) has today announced that its Fetherston Ridge residential precinct will be a literal intersection of artistic minds.

Each of the eight roads in the development will be named in honour of artists, including renowned sculptor Dr Tom Bass AM, whose artwork includes Ethos in Civic Square, Canberra.

“It seems appropriate, given the picturesque views to the Brindabella Mountains, that we honour those that would have portrayed such beauty in their artwork,” DHA Managing Director Peter Howman said.

“These new names not only honour painters, but also a sculptor, printmaker, photographer, potter and botanist. Sculptor Dr Tom Bass AM is renowned for his work in Canberra and Sydney, while printmaker Udo Sellbach OAM was the founding Director of the Canberra School of Art.”

The new road names are:

Bellette Street – Painter and teacher Jean Mary Bellette, best known for her neo-classical style of painting.

Horgan Lane – Painter and draughtsman John Columbia Horgan, a water colourist who founded the Artists Society of Canberra.

Isherwood Street – Landscape painter Jean de Courtenay Isherwood OAM, produced two series to accompany Dorothea McKellar’s famous poem My Country.

Jerrems Crescent – Photographer Carol Joyce Jerrems, the first contemporary Australian woman photographer to have work acquired by the National Gallery of Australia.

Sellbach Street – Print maker and founding Director of the Canberra School of Art Udo Sellbach OAM.

Shiga Street - Potter Shiga Shiego, a Japanese artist who had an important influence on Australian pottery.

Tom Bass Terrace – Sculptor Dr Thomas Dwyer Bass AM was commissioned to complete pieces all over the country including the Lintel Sculpture at the National Library of Australia.

Unwin Street (formerly Unwin Place) – Water colourist and botanist Ernest Ewart Unwin was the headmaster of the Friends’ School in Hobart.
