29 October 2018 Invictus Games shines a light on Australian Defence community

The Invictus Games Sydney 2018 wrapped up on Saturday evening with a sell-out closing ceremony at Qudos Bank Arena. The ceremony marked the end of eight remarkable days of competition that showcased the resilience of the human spirit.

As an official supporter of the Invictus Games 2018, Defence Housing Australia (DHA) was honoured to be a part of a world-class event that has had a positive social impact on the Australian Defence community.

‘Throughout the week DHA staff acted as volunteers and also ran two activity zones in the Games precinct,’ DHA Managing Director Jan Mason said.

‘They were able to connect personally with Defence members and their families, not just those Australians attending but members from across the globe. Stories of conflict, camaraderie and the role of family in supporting those affected has had an immeasurable impact on everyone from DHA that attended. I hope that in sharing their Invictus experience with their colleagues we can help everyone understand how important DHA’s mission truly is.

DHA was established 30 years ago to deliver a new standard of housing for Defence members across Australia. In doing so DHA has had a positive impact on the quality of life for service men, women and children.

‘This past week has highlighted the importance of that role and the flow on effect it has in the broader community,’ Ms Mason said. ‘Being involved in the Invictus Games was an emotional and humbling experience. I am so proud of the Defence community and the DHA staff who serve them.’

The next Invictus Games will be held in The Hague, Netherlands in 2019.
