20 September 2018 DHA The Prince’s Terrace wins inaugural Urban Developer Award for Excellence in Sustainability

Defence Housing Australia’s (DHA) development in Bowden SA, The Prince’s Terrace, has won the Award for Excellence in Sustainability at the inaugural The Urban Developer Awards.

Held in Brisbane on Wednesday 19 September, The Urban Developer Awards celebrate leadership and success in the industry across Australia and New Zealand, and showcase the people, programs, places and projects that positively shape our cities.

This award confirms the world-class leadership of The Prince’s Terrace in sustainable design, with an emphasis on local, low-carbon materials and trades.

DHA Senior Development Manager, Stephen Hutchinson, said approximately 230 local trades and suppliers supported the build and every fixture, fitting, product and supplier complies with Green Star criteria to reduce hidden emissions.

‘DHA strives to be at the cutting edge of urban design—lessons will flow from The Prince’s Terrace; for DHA, our partners, and the industry,’ said Mr Hutchinson.

‘Using natural, locally sourced materials supported a sustainable supply chain and helped build skills locally.

‘In addition, the clever integration of energy-efficient and passive design, the flexible floorplan, and foam ZEGO block construction all reduce energy consumption by 65 per cent and provide substantial financial savings.

‘Then there is the reticulated recycled water system that reduces potable water usage by 55 percent,’ Mr Hutchinson continued.

The Prince’s Terrace is a ground-breaking collaboration between DHA, The Prince’s Trust Australia and the State Urban Renewal Authority (Renewal SA) and is the first residential project in Australia to receive a ‘6 Star Green Star’ design rating from the Green Building Council of Australia.

The Prince’s Terrace was also recognised as a finalist in The Urban Developers’ In-Fill Residential award category.
