Award-winning developer Defence Housing Australia (DHA) today celebrated the completion of its 1,000th Members Choice Accommodation (MCA) apartment.
The property is one of 28 apartments in Theodore St, Stafford, a suburb of Brisbane, approximately seven kilometres from Gallipoli Barracks.
Each apartment has two bedrooms, bath and ensuite, with secure car parking. All apartments have been built to a six star energy rating (NatHers).
The three-storey complex incorporates shared community spaces, bicycle racks, barbeque areas and drought-resistant landscaping.
DHA’s MCA program, which began in 2006, provides homes for single Defence members and those members who temporarily live away from their families.
DHA now has MCA accommodation in all mainland capital cities as well as Townsville, Newcastle and Rockingham.
Additionally, MCA apartments will be completed next month in Ipswich.
DHA’s Chairman, the Hon Sandy Macdonald and Acting Managing Director, Jan Mason, welcomed the completion of the 1,000th MCA apartment as an example of DHA’s commitment to meeting the needs of Defence members and their families.
‘More than 10 years ago we recognised the changing nature of the typical Defence family and accordingly we launched Members Choice Accommodation,’ Mr Macdonald said.
‘We began providing apartments and townhouses for members without dependents (MWOD) and members with dependents unaccompanied (MWDU).
‘MCA increased the variety of our portfolio to include a range of apartments that suited single members. These were provided as an alternative option for Defence members to rent on the private market.’
Ms Mason said MCA accommodation was in high demand among Defence members, with a 95 per cent satisfaction rating according to surveys.
‘We are on track to building a portfolio of 2,000 MCA homes around Australia,’ Ms Mason said.
Ms Mason said the Stafford project was the first undertaken by DHA with Hutchinson Builders, one of Australia’s largest privately-owned building and construction companies.
